ATTENTION Women and Hispanic Farmers and Ranchers

Please Spread the Word
Click on image for enlarged view

ATTENTION Hispanic and Women Farmers and Ranchers: Between 1981 and 2000, certain groups of Americans were discriminated against by some USDA offices around the country when they applied for agricultural/farm loans. It is Agriculture Secretary Vilsack's goal to right those wrongs, turn the page, and move forward.

The United States Government has established a Claims Process to make available up to $1.33 billion or more to farmers who alleged discrimination by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) based on being female, or based on being Hispanic, in making or servicing farm loans during certain periods between 1981 and 2000. If you qualify and submit a timely claim, you could receive an award of up to $50,000 or up to $250,000 in cash, depending on the evidence that you submit. USDA will also provide a total of up to $160 million in debt relief to successful Claimants who currently owe USDA money for eligible farm loans. Successful Claimants may also receive an additional amount, equal to 25% of the combined cash award plus the principal amount of debt relief, to help pay federal taxes that may be owed.

The new claims process, which is entirely voluntary, is an important step towards correcting the wrongs of the past and strengthening the USDA for the future.

If you, or anyone you know may qualify for this process, please apply and spread the word. The USDA hopes to reach everyone who may have been impacted. For further information and to file a claim through the Hispanic and Women Farmers and Ranchers Claims Process visit

Those Eligible Must File Claims No Later Than
March 25, 2013

Graduating to a Pay Gap

Click for larger image
For women it's not just about getting a job – one of the big election issues – it's about getting fair and honest pay. AAUW's new research report finds that, just one year after college graduation, women are already earning less than their male peers. One immediate effect of the pay gap – female college graduates pay a bigger chunk of their paychecks to student loan debt than male college graduates, which means that women have less to live on.

The UAF Women's Center will be hosting a watch party for AAUW's Graduating to a Pay Gap research discussion panel. This panel will take place on Thursday, November 16th at 11:30am in the UAF Women's Center.

Address from 2012 UAF Women Faculty Luncheon - Recording Available Here

Click on the image above for an enlarged view

If you missed Visiting Scholar, Dr. Sharon Bird, at the CSW Women Faculty Luncheon Sept. 25th, 2012, or if you want to review Bird's address and PowerPoint presentation again, the recording of the lecture is available online at

You will need to provide an email address and a name to access this Elluminate Live recording. You will probably have to download a java file as well, to be able to "run" the recording. It might take some time for the recording to open, depending on your internet speed.

The video window of Dr. Bird speaking in this Elluminate LIVE recording is not of highest quality. :-( The PowerPoint slides show up well and the sound is good, however :-) You can move the video window, or even close the video window if you choose. We have a close-up high quality video which we will integrate with the PowerPoint slides as soon as we can - the link to the enhanced version will be provided as soon as possible. Check back often :-)

In the meantime, ENJOY!

Ouch, that stereotype hurts

WHAT: Ouch, that stereotype hurts!
a presentation by Sherry Hatcher
brought to you by UAF Diversity and Equal Opportunity
WHEN: Tuesday, May 15 10-11am
WHERE: Globe Room, 215 Elvey Building

Please join us on Tues, May 15 in the Globe Room from 10 - 11 am to hear Sherry L Hatcher speak on "Ouch, that stereotype hurts!"

"Ouch, that stereotype hurts!" concerns the complications of communicating in today's diverse workplace. Whether you are a supervisor, project manager, faculty, or staff, communicating respectfully is a "must" to be successful in your job.  Biased, stereotypical or otherwise poor communication undermines morale, teamwork, and productivity.  In this training you will learn the skills to enhance your effectiveness and influence by choosing to communicate in a bias-free, inclusive way.

Ms. Sherry Hatcher joined the Johnson Space Center Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity team in July, 2008. She has an extensive EEO background, serving as an EEO Specialist in the Civil Rights Regional Office for the USDA Forest Service, EEO Director, United States Army Alaska, and EEO Specialist Fort Wainwright, Alaska. Sherry began her EEO career as a collateral duty counselor and trainer while working as a training coordinator for the Army. Ms. Hatcher currently serves as the Complaints Manager at JSC.
Ms. Hatcher claims Texas as home, but has lived most of her adult life throughout the U.S. and overseas. She began her federal service as a DoDDS teacher in Misawa Japan and has held positions in Omaha, Nebraska, Crete, Greece, Cheyenne, Wyoming, Dayton, Ohio and Fairbanks and Anchorage, Alaska.

Ms. Hatcher graduated from North Texas State University with a B.S. in Education and attended Graduate school at Texas Women's University in Denton, TX. She taught gifted and talented education before entering the federal service.

Senator Begich Urges Reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act

Senator Mark Begich today spoke on the floor of the United States Senate urging his colleagues to pass the Violence Against Women Act Reauthorization (VAWA), which is scheduled to come up for a vote later this week. The bill has not been reauthorized since 2006 and would reauthorize existing VAWA grant programs to prevent and respond to violent crimes against women, children, and families and educate individuals about domestic violence and sexual assault. Sen. Begich notes that 3 out of every 4 Alaskans know or have known someone who has experienced domestic or sexual violence, and child sexual assault in Alaska is almost six times the national average, underlining the immediate need for this bill.

“It’s not every day that we get to vote on a law that actually saves lives, but this one does. The Senate needs to send the simple and important message that Alaskans and all Americans will not tolerate violence against women, children, and families. We must do our part to reduce domestic violence and sexual assault, it’s time for us to step up and make sure this happens now. I look forward to casting my vote for the reauthorization hopefully very soon,” Begich said.
