Equal Pay Act 50th Anniversary

50th Anniversary of Equal Pay Act

Stop by the Women's Center (112 Eielson Building, UAF) to check out our display commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Equal Pay Act, signed by President Kennedy on June 10th, 1963. We've made some progress, however we still have a long way to go, as can be seen in the proportional size dollars representing the average wages for men who work full time, and women who work full time. The gap is even greater when factoring in race/ethnicity :-(

Visit the Justice Blog http://blogs.justice.gov/main/archives/2948 for information, background, and links on the Equal Pay Act. Peruse this _50 years After the Equal Pay Act: Assessing the Past, Taking Stock of the Future_ report for an analysis of where we've been and where we need to go http://www.whitehouse.gov/sites/default/files/image/image_file/equal_pay-task_force_progress_report_june_10_2013.pdf

ATTENTION Women and Hispanic Farmers and Ranchers

Please Spread the Word
Click on image for enlarged view

ATTENTION Hispanic and Women Farmers and Ranchers: Between 1981 and 2000, certain groups of Americans were discriminated against by some USDA offices around the country when they applied for agricultural/farm loans. It is Agriculture Secretary Vilsack's goal to right those wrongs, turn the page, and move forward.

The United States Government has established a Claims Process to make available up to $1.33 billion or more to farmers who alleged discrimination by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) based on being female, or based on being Hispanic, in making or servicing farm loans during certain periods between 1981 and 2000. If you qualify and submit a timely claim, you could receive an award of up to $50,000 or up to $250,000 in cash, depending on the evidence that you submit. USDA will also provide a total of up to $160 million in debt relief to successful Claimants who currently owe USDA money for eligible farm loans. Successful Claimants may also receive an additional amount, equal to 25% of the combined cash award plus the principal amount of debt relief, to help pay federal taxes that may be owed.

The new claims process, which is entirely voluntary, is an important step towards correcting the wrongs of the past and strengthening the USDA for the future.

If you, or anyone you know may qualify for this process, please apply and spread the word. The USDA hopes to reach everyone who may have been impacted. For further information and to file a claim through the Hispanic and Women Farmers and Ranchers Claims Process visit

Those Eligible Must File Claims No Later Than
March 25, 2013

Graduating to a Pay Gap

Click for larger image
For women it's not just about getting a job – one of the big election issues – it's about getting fair and honest pay. AAUW's new research report finds that, just one year after college graduation, women are already earning less than their male peers. One immediate effect of the pay gap – female college graduates pay a bigger chunk of their paychecks to student loan debt than male college graduates, which means that women have less to live on.

The UAF Women's Center will be hosting a watch party for AAUW's Graduating to a Pay Gap research discussion panel. This panel will take place on Thursday, November 16th at 11:30am in the UAF Women's Center.

Please visit http://www.aauw.org/GraduatetoaPayGap/WatchParty.cfm for more details.
