Strike (a docudrama about the founding of Solidarity)
Tuesday, December 2nd 6:30PM
Arctic Java Coffeehouse, UAF Wood Center

This tense and triumphant docudrama about the founding of Solidarity follows the life of Agnieszka Kowalska, the female crane operator who helped to radicalize the Polish labor movement. In these times when "solidarity" seems so essential, this film provides us an opportunity to reflect on the possibilities and promise of solidarity.

See this spectacular series of scenes set to the soundtrack from "Strike" for a glimpse into the experience awaiting you at our Docs with the WoC Fall Finale.

Docs with the WoC is a series of documentary films about women, brought to you by the UAF Women's Center.

Join us for our UAF launch of Trans Awareness Week 2014, with one of the sweetest films to emerge from Europe in the 1990s.

Ma Vie en Rose (My Life in Pink)
Monday, Nov 17th @ 6:30pm
Arctic Java, UAF Wood Center
This film, in French, with English subtitles,
is the story of a little boy who believes he was meant to be a girl.
A bittersweet mix of innocent fantasy, crushing misunderstandings, as well as tenderness, this film reminds us that, to a child, anything is possible.

Brought to you by the UAF Women's Center and the
Women's and Gender Studies Program.

The Girls in the Band * Documentary Film and Discussion * Tue Nov 11 6:30pm

Click on image for enlarged view
When the world told them they couldn't play, they did it anyway!

Join us for the documentary that tells their story:

"The Girls in the Band"
Tuesday, November 11th 6:30pm
Arctic Java in UAF Wood Center

In the nineteen thirties and forties, hundreds of women musicians toured the country in glamorous All-Girl Bands, while others played side by side with their male counterparts. The Girls in the Band tells the poignant stories of these female jazz and big band instrumentalists and their fascinating, groundbreaking journeys from the late 30s to the present day. They endured sexism, racism and diminished opportunities for decades, yet continued to persevere, inspire and elevate their talents in a field that seldom welcomed them. Today there is a new breed of gifted young women talking their rightful place in a world which can no longer deny their talents!

Following the documentary, Professor Karen Gustafson, of UAF's Borealis Brass, will facilitate our discussion of this film, and these women, with some of whom she has had the pleasure to work.

Burning Times * Documentary Film & Discussion * Tue Oct 28 6pm

Click on image for enlarged view
Join us for our Halloween Week *Docs with the WoC* documentary film and discussion:   "Burning Times,"    a documentary about old, and new witches.

Burning Times
Tuesday, October 28th 6:30pm
@ Arctic Java, UAF Wood Center

Witch hunts, loathing, and persecution of those who are different...

False accusations and witch trials through the ages have led to massive torture, burnings at the stake, and ultimately to destruction of organic and earth centered ways of life.

Can widespread violence against women and neglect of our environment be traced back to the bigotry and bias of witch hunts?

You'll want to be with us in Arctic Java for this documentary and discussion!

Not Alone

Click on image for larger view of report cover page

President Obama proclaimed in January, 2014 "we need to keep saying to anyone out there who has ever been assaulted:
you are not alone. We have your back."
On April 29th the White House Task Force to Protect Students from Sexual Assault released its first report, "Not Alone."
Not Alone is built upon the national conversation the Task Force initiated with those committed to
ending sexual assault.

In "Not Alone," the Task Force offers their first set of action steps and recommendations.

You can access the "Not Alone" report (20 pages of MUST READ information, recommendations & links for those who care about creating and maintaining safe campuses) at this link:
In addition, the U.S. Department of Education Office for Civil Rights (OCR) released "Questions and Answers on Title IX and Sexual Violence". These questions and answers clarify the legal requirements and guidance articulated in the Dear Colleague Letter (DCL) that was issued by the DOE Office of Civil Rights on April 4, 2011.

You can access the Questions and Answers document here:

Read these documents

Check out the Task Force's website
This Not Alone website provides resources, tools and connections to help all of us turn the tide on sexual assault and violence.
