Strike (a docudrama about the founding of Solidarity)
Tuesday, December 2nd 6:30PM
Arctic Java Coffeehouse, UAF Wood Center

This tense and triumphant docudrama about the founding of Solidarity follows the life of Agnieszka Kowalska, the female crane operator who helped to radicalize the Polish labor movement. In these times when "solidarity" seems so essential, this film provides us an opportunity to reflect on the possibilities and promise of solidarity.

See this spectacular series of scenes set to the soundtrack from "Strike" for a glimpse into the experience awaiting you at our Docs with the WoC Fall Finale.

Docs with the WoC is a series of documentary films about women, brought to you by the UAF Women's Center.

Ma Vie en Rose (My Life in Pink)
Monday, Nov 17th @ 6:30pm
Arctic Java, UAF Wood Center

This film, in French, with English subtitles,
is the story of a little boy who believes he was meant to be a girl.
A bittersweet mix of innocent fantasy, crushing misunderstandings, as well as tenderness, this film reminds us that, to a child, anything is possible.

Brought to you by the UAF Women's Center and the
Women's and Gender Studies Program.

The Girls in the Band * Documentary Film and Discussion * Tue Nov 11 6:30pm

When the world told them they couldn't play, they did it anyway!

Join us for the documentary that tells their story:

"The Girls in the Band"
Tuesday, November 11th 6:30pm
Arctic Java in UAF Wood Center

In the nineteen thirties and forties, hundreds of women musicians toured the country in glamorous All-Girl Bands, while others played side by side with their male counterparts. The Girls in the Band tells the poignant stories of these female jazz and big band instrumentalists and their fascinating, groundbreaking journeys from the late 30s to the present day. They endured sexism, racism and diminished opportunities for decades, yet continued to persevere, inspire and elevate their talents in a field that seldom welcomed them. Today there is a new breed of gifted young women talking their rightful place in a world which can no longer deny their talents!

Following the documentary, Professor Karen Gustafson, of UAF's Borealis Brass, will facilitate our discussion of this film, and these women, with some of whom she has had the pleasure to work.
