Soroptimist Women's Opportunity Award $$ Available

Soroptimist is an international volunteer organization for business and professional women who work to improve the lives of women and girls in local communities and throughout the world. Their international Women's Opportunity Awards program disperses nearly one million dollars annually to help women reclaim their dreams of a better life for themselves and their families.

The local Women's Opportunity Award application period is open through December 15th.

LGBTQ&A Scholarships!

Since 1993, more than $2 million in scholarships to support education and leadership development has been awarded to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer (LGBTQ) and straight-ally students. 

Pride Foundation scholarships are available for students from Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington. Full details on who qualifies for a scholarship are available here.

Sen. Begich Spring Internships

U.S. Senator Mark Begich is accepting applications for Spring 2011 student internships in his Fairbanks, Anchorage, Juneau and Washington, DC offices.

Interns work in a variety of areas supporting the Begich Staff including researching Alaska issues, working with legislative staff on congressional issues, helping with constituent cases and inquiries, and attending meetings and briefings.

Interns are college-age. The goal is to have students work regular office hours, but accommodations can be made to work with class schedules. Interns are offered a small stipend for their service.

The application period ends Wednesday, November 10th.

Terry Tempest Williams will present this year’s Bartlett Lecture Tuesday, Sept. 14th at 7:30 pm in the Wood Center Ballroom at UAF. Williams’ expansive career in the field of conservation spans fourteen books and five honorary doctoral degrees. Her writing centers largely on the conservation of our nation’s land.

Williams creates a synthesis of a science-oriented argument for conservation while maintaining a poetic appreciation for nature, a bond codified by Williams’ own exploration and experimentation in the world’s remaining untouched wilderness. She was actively involved in protests against nuclear testing in the deserts of Nevada, has received the highest honor from The Wilderness Society, and has experienced the wilderness of countries all around the world. This FREE lecture is a MUST attend event!


An informal reception will be held earlier on Tuesday (from 1:00 to 2:00 pm in Wood Center E / F). Williams will sign books after her evening lecture.

REALLY FREE MARKET

The University of Alaska Fairbanks will host the second Really FREE Market of the summer.

Date: Aug 14

Time: 10am - 1pm

Venue: Nenana Parking Lot (across from the Patty Center - UAF)

The market is a good opportunity to share clothes and other back-to-school items with local families before the school year begins. Please encourage your family and friends to consider participating.

Drop off clean, safe, usable items between 8-10 a.m. the day of the market.The earlier items are dropped off, the more time our volunteers will have to organize them. Look for clearly marked signs for drop off lanes. Volunteers will help you unload your items.

Come back from 10 a.m. to 1:00 pm to browse the FREE "treasures" ... take what you can use, PLUS enjoy FREE music by Alaskalina and Almost a Minyan.

Climate Change and Weather in AK

Scientist breaks down climate change for free lecture

Atmospheric scientist Uma Bhatt will discuss the difference between climate and weather and how each affects Alaskans at the free lecture and learning session, “Climate Variability and Change in Alaska,” at 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 2.

The event is part of the Monday Marvels series, a free hands-on session and lecture series presented by UAF Summer Sessions & Lifelong Learning and the Alaska Summer Research Academy (ASRA).

All events are held in 201 Reichardt on UAF campus. Sessions are taught by ASRA faculty, cover a wide range of scientific topics, and are free.
