All music composed by Etsuko Kimura Pederson (Fairbanks composer &
pianist, and UAF Alumna.)

Pianists: Etsuko Kimura Pederson and Paul Krejci.

All music is based on Etsuko’s life experience in Alaska.

UAF and Tohoku University are Partner Universities.  This partnership celebrated its 15th anniversary in 2010.  Etsuko and Paul performed a UAF Friendship Concert at Tohoku University in May 2010.  On March 11th 2011, the earthquake and tsunami in Japan severely damaged Tohoku University. Donations at this concert, and sales of Etsuko Kimura Pederson's Modern Music for Two Pianos CD will benefit Tohoku University.

Celebrate - 40th Anniversary - Women’s Equality Day!

At the behest of Rep. Bella Abzug (D-NY), in 1971 the U.S. Congress designated August 26 as “Women’s Equality Day.”

The date was selected to commemorate the 1920 passage of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, granting women in the United States the right to vote.

The observance of Women’s Equality Day not only commemorates the passage of the 19th Amendment, but also calls attention to women’s continuing efforts toward full equality.

WHEREAS, the women of the United States have been treated as second-class citizens and have not been entitled the full rights and privileges, public or private, legal or institutional, which are available to male citizens of the United States; and

WHEREAS, the women of the United States have united to assure that these rights and privileges are available to all citizens equally regardless of sex; and

WHEREAS, the women of the United States have designated August 26, the anniversary date of the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment, as symbol of the continued fight for equal rights: and

WHEREAS, the women of United States are to be commended and supported in their organizations and activities,

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, that August 26th of each year is designated as Women’s Equality Day, and the President is authorized and requested to issue a proclamation annually in commemoration of that day in 1920, on which the women of America were first given the right to vote, and that day in 1970, on which a nationwide demonstration for women’s rights took place.

Happy 39th Birthday Title IX

Title IX (the first legislation specifically prohibiting sex discrimination in education) turns 39 years old this June.

Title IX reads: "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance"

While Title IX is best known for its impact on high school and collegiate athletics, Title IX is not just about sports. "It prohibits discrimination against girls and boys, women and men, students and employees, in all levels of education. In accordance with the 1987 Civil Rights Restoration Act, it continues to apply to all education programs and activities that receive federal financial assistance. For example, it prohibits sex discrimination in facilities, access to courses, career guidance, student financial aid, health and insurance benefits, employment in educational institutions, and sexual harassment ...

Despite progress on some indicators, many inequities remain. Women earn only 20 percent of engineering degrees. Sex segregation and tracking funnel 90 percent of girls and women into traditionally female fields in vocational and technical education. Boys are two-thirds of the special education students and receive 71% of suspensions from school."

 A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant and A Prayer: Writings To Stop Violence Against Women and Girls, is a groundbreaking collection of monologues by world-renowned authors and playwrights, edited by Eve Ensler and Mollie Doyle and commissioned by V-Day for the first V-Day: UNTIL THE VIOLENCE STOPS festival, which took place June 2006 in New York City. The writings are inspired, funny, angry, heartfelt, tragic, and beautiful. But above all, together they create a true and profound portrait of how violence against women affects every one of us. A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant, And A Prayer are a call to the world to demand an end to violence against women.

About V-Day
V-Day is a global activist movement to end violence against women and girls that raises funds and awareness through benefit productions of Playwright/Founder Eve Ensler’s award winning play The Vagina Monologues and other artistic works.  In 2010, over 5400 V-Day benefit events took place produced by volunteer activists in the U.S. and around the world, educating millions of people about the reality of violence against women and girls. To date, the V-Day movement has raised over $75 million and educated millions about the issue of violence against women and the efforts to end it, crafted international educational, media and PSA campaigns, launched the Karama program in the Middle East, reopened shelters, and funded over 12,000 community-based anti-violence programs and safe houses in Democratic Republic Of Congo, Haiti, Kenya, South Dakota, Egypt and Iraq. The Lesbian, Gay , Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) Friends & Allies Student Scholarship was established to provide a scholarship annually to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) students, children of LGBT persons , or friends and allies of the LGBT community who have affected it positively.
Qualifications:

• Must be a full time or part-time student attending the University of Alaska Fairbanks
• Must be in good academic standing
• Preference will be given to students who were born in Alaska or are Alaska residents

Hundreds of thousands of students at thousands of middle schools, high schools and colleges will take some form of a vow of silence to bring attention to anti-LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) name-calling, bullying and harassment in schools.

UWA Scholarship Application Deadline March 31st

The University of Alaska Fairbanks University Women's Association is accepting applications for UWA scholarships for the Academic Year 2011-12. Awards range from $1000-3000. Women students enrolled in either an Associate Degree program with 9 or more credits or a Bachelor's Degree program with 12 or more credits and with sophomore standing or above may apply. Applicants must have a 3.0 or better GPA for the past two semesters.

 The Fairbanks Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) is offering $1,000 scholarships to local women with plans to re-enter or continue their post-secondary education or to pursue educational projects. The awards will be based primarily on merit.

Each applicant should write a letter stating her educational background, why she wants to continue her education, her educational goals, her needs, and how she plans to use her education in the future.

If the applicant wishes to pursue an educational project instead of taking formal classes, she should describe her project and how she plans to use the award money to complete it.

Scholarships for International Education-DEADLINE April 11, 5pm

This Scholarship was established to promote international education among humanities or liberal arts undergraduate students by encouraging UAF students to study abroad and by helping foreign nationals enrolled at UAF.

To be eligible, a student must :

• Be a junior or Senior enrolled in a College of Liberal Arts program at the University of Alaska Fairbanks during the semester(s) in which the award is to be in effect; and
• have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.5 in his/ her major and 3.3 overall ( or equivalent) at the time of applying and
• be either a US citizen planning to study abroad for one or more semesters during 2011-2012 academic year or a foreign national admitted to UAF on exchange or a regular degree program for the 2011-2012 academic year.

Applicants must submit;

• the scholarships for International Education Application, available from the Office of International Programs or Financial Aid;
• a brief summary of your educational achievements;
• a short essay ( approximately 1200 words) in English that explains why you are interested in  studying in a foreign country and how the scholarship might help you realize educational goals; and
• two recommendations by academic faculty of which at least one must be by a professor from your major discipline
• U.S. citizens/ legal residents shall also submit; a plan of action showing host country, institution, length of stay, courses to be taken or project to be pursued, contacts already established etc; and a formal evaluation arranged through and approved by the Department of Foreign Languages, of proficiency in reading, writing oral comprehension and speaking in the host country's language unless that language is English.
• Foreign nationals shall also submit; a statement as to why you need additional funds to complete your studies at UAF ; and a formal evaluation of your degree of mastery of English beyond the minimal test scores required for admission to the University.

The UAF Women's & Gender Studies Program invites students to submit posters in honor of Women's History & Culture Month.

Posters many be research-based, scholarly, and/or creative, and should address a topic appropriate to a Women's & Gender Studies class.
Posters will be displayed March 22nd & 23rd in the Wood Center at UAF.

Submission Guidelines:

Posters must be submitted to the UAF Women’s Center 112 Eielson Bldg by 5:00 PM March 21, 2011

• Posters may contain significant amount of text, BUT all text MUST be large enough to be readable from a distance of 4 feet
• Minimum size of poster is 11x17"; maximum size is 36x48"
• Posters may be constructed of any medium; posters must be able to hang on a vertical surface with only six push pins or masking tape
• Only original work may be submitted
• Only currently registered UAF students are eligible to submit posters
• Both undergraduate and graduate students are eligible
• Students may submit more than one poster; however, each student may win only one award

Ahead of Time is a documentary film celebrating the life of 99-year old Ruth Gruber, a journalist, writer, witness, and participant in the making of 20^th century history. Born in 1911, Gruber was the youngest person in the world to receive a PhD when she was 20 years old. Gruber was a feminist before feminism. While at school in Cologne, she witnessed, and documented the rise of Nazism. A trail-blazer who rejected the gender standards of her generation, she became a journalist when she was 24 years old, traveling to the Arctic in 1935, the first Western reporter to visit the Soviet Arctic. She traveled to Alaska in 1942 on a fact finding mission for the Roosevelt administration. Her involvement in the events of WWII gave Ruth Gruber a unique perspective on the most defining events of the 20^th century. In Ahead of Time Ruth Gruber shares her perspectives on the news she reported and made, interwoven with archival footage of these defining moments. (Photos from 1940s Fairbanks included!)
