The screening will take place at the Blue Loon, 2999 Parks Highway. There will be a discussion on Waring’s Alternative Vision of Economic Theory following the movie.

"When Marilyn Waring was elected to the New Zealand parliament in 1975 she thought she might one day return to her first love, classical music. Instead, the 22-year-old Member of Parliament was re-elected three times and blazed a trail that eventually overturned her government on the nuclear issue and launched her as the foremost spokesperson for global feminist economics. Witty, irreverent and accomplished in what she calls "the art of the dumb question," Waring challenges the myths of economics, its elitist stance, and our tacit compliance with political agendas that masquerade as objective economic policy."" Go to Bat for Girls in Sports

Today is National Women and Girls in Sports Day -- the perfect time to go to bat to achieve equity for girls and women in sports!

Title IX, the law that prohibits sex discrimination in educational programs which receive federal funding assistance, has made great strides in breaking through barriers for female athletes. But today, 40 years later, there is still work to be done -- particularly at the high school level.  High school girls continue to face discrimination in scheduling, equipment, facilities and overall participation opportunities.

Better information can help high schools enhance compliance with Title IX and aid in fostering the continued expansion of athletic opportunities. Unlike colleges, high schools are not currently required to disclose any data on equity in sports, making it difficult for high schools and the communities they serve to assess their compliance with Title IX and the status of girls' access to athletic opportunities. The High School Athletics Accountability Act (H.R. 458) would address this gap, requiring high schools to report basic data on the number of female and male students in their athletic programs and the expenditures made for their sports teams.

WHAT: Book Launch & Reading
WHERE: Wood Center Ballroom

"Steam Laundry is a novel-in-poems by Nicole Stellon O'Donnell. It's about Sarah Ellen Gibson, the sixth woman to arrive in Fairbanks in the gold rush of 1903. With her two children, she followed her husband to Dawson City, Yukon Territory in 1898. As their relationship faltered and her business opportunities dried up, she fled to Fairbanks with hopes of opening her own hotel. The book weaves persona, with poems in the voices of many characters, lyric poems, and historical photographs and documents to trace her path."(Information and Photograph from the Steam Laundry Facebook Page).
