FNA offers child development activities, individualized curriculum, periodic screening and assessments, family services, regularly scheduled home visits, health and nutrition services and parent involvement opportunities. UWA Scholarship Application Deadline March 31st

The University of Alaska Fairbanks University Women's Association is accepting applications for UWA scholarships for the Academic Year 2011-12. Awards range from $1000-3000. Women students enrolled in either an Associate Degree program with 9 or more credits or a Bachelor's Degree program with 12 or more credits and with sophomore standing or above may apply. Applicants must have a 3.0 or better GPA for the past two semesters.

 The Fairbanks Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) is offering $1,000 scholarships to local women with plans to re-enter or continue their post-secondary education or to pursue educational projects. The awards will be based primarily on merit.

Each applicant should write a letter stating her educational background, why she wants to continue her education, her educational goals, her needs, and how she plans to use her education in the future.

If the applicant wishes to pursue an educational project instead of taking formal classes, she should describe her project and how she plans to use the award money to complete it.

Scholarships for International Education-DEADLINE April 11, 5pm

This Scholarship was established to promote international education among humanities or liberal arts undergraduate students by encouraging UAF students to study abroad and by helping foreign nationals enrolled at UAF.

To be eligible, a student must :

• Be a junior or Senior enrolled in a College of Liberal Arts program at the University of Alaska Fairbanks during the semester(s) in which the award is to be in effect; and
• have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.5 in his/ her major and 3.3 overall ( or equivalent) at the time of applying and
• be either a US citizen planning to study abroad for one or more semesters during 2011-2012 academic year or a foreign national admitted to UAF on exchange or a regular degree program for the 2011-2012 academic year.

Applicants must submit;

• the scholarships for International Education Application, available from the Office of International Programs or Financial Aid;
• a brief summary of your educational achievements;
• a short essay ( approximately 1200 words) in English that explains why you are interested in  studying in a foreign country and how the scholarship might help you realize educational goals; and
• two recommendations by academic faculty of which at least one must be by a professor from your major discipline
• U.S. citizens/ legal residents shall also submit; a plan of action showing host country, institution, length of stay, courses to be taken or project to be pursued, contacts already established etc; and a formal evaluation arranged through and approved by the Department of Foreign Languages, of proficiency in reading, writing oral comprehension and speaking in the host country's language unless that language is English.
• Foreign nationals shall also submit; a statement as to why you need additional funds to complete your studies at UAF ; and a formal evaluation of your degree of mastery of English beyond the minimal test scores required for admission to the University.

Calling All STUDENTS: Enter Poster Contest in honor of Women's History & Culture Month

The UAF Women's & Gender Studies Program invites students to submit posters in honor of Women's History & Culture Month.

Posters many be research-based, scholarly, and/or creative, and should address a topic appropriate to a Women's & Gender Studies class.
Posters will be displayed March 22nd & 23rd in the Wood Center at UAF.

Submission Guidelines:

Posters must be submitted to the UAF Women’s Center 112 Eielson Bldg by 5:00 PM March 21, 2011

• Posters may contain significant amount of text, BUT all text MUST be large enough to be readable from a distance of 4 feet
• Minimum size of poster is 11x17"; maximum size is 36x48"
• Posters may be constructed of any medium; posters must be able to hang on a vertical surface with only six push pins or masking tape
• Only original work may be submitted
• Only currently registered UAF students are eligible to submit posters
• Both undergraduate and graduate students are eligible
• Students may submit more than one poster; however, each student may win only one award

Ahead of Time is a documentary film celebrating the life of 99-year old Ruth Gruber, a journalist, writer, witness, and participant in the making of 20^th century history. Born in 1911, Gruber was the youngest person in the world to receive a PhD when she was 20 years old. Gruber was a feminist before feminism. While at school in Cologne, she witnessed, and documented the rise of Nazism. A trail-blazer who rejected the gender standards of her generation, she became a journalist when she was 24 years old, traveling to the Arctic in 1935, the first Western reporter to visit the Soviet Arctic. She traveled to Alaska in 1942 on a fact finding mission for the Roosevelt administration. Her involvement in the events of WWII gave Ruth Gruber a unique perspective on the most defining events of the 20^th century. In Ahead of Time Ruth Gruber shares her perspectives on the news she reported and made, interwoven with archival footage of these defining moments. (Photos from 1940s Fairbanks included!)

Radical Arts for Women Short Story Writing

April 1st submission deadline

Every year, RAW encourages writers to write and sponsors a short storycontest open to all women living in Alaska. The fiction pieces must be between 250 and 5,000 words and contain some lesbian content. The grand prize is $500, second place $300, and third place $100. Entries come from all over Alaska and we encourage you to enter!

*2011 GUIDELINES:*

- Each entry must contain a cover sheet with author’s name, address,phone number, email, story title, and word count.

-The short story must be between 250 and 5,000 words and contain some lesbian content. Stories should be on 8.5-x-11 size paper, double spaced,1-inch margins, no less than size 10 font. Do not put author’s name on the story. The fiction and lesbian stipulations may be interpreted by the author, but we are not seeking poetry or non-fiction. Erotica is acceptable. Electronic submissions are not accepted. Unpublished submissions only.

- Author must be a woman living in Alaska as of January 2011.

- April 1, 2011 is the postmark deadline for entries.

- There is no entry fee.

- Winner receives $500 and the winning short story will appear on http://www.radicalartsforwomen.org/contest.html and may also be published in the Alaska LGBT literary journal.

- Honorable mentions will be given at the judges’ discretion.

- Winners will be announced at Celebration of Change April 23, 2011. For list of complete list of winners, include a SASE with entry.

Gals Read VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY WITH THE LITERACY COUNCIL

Gals Read is a program of the Fairbanks North Star Borough Public Library in partnership with the Literacy Council of Alaska and FNSB School District. It is a companion program to Guys Read, which was developed to overcome the loss of interest in reading that is common among boys at that age. Only offering this fun program to boys, however, was seen as detrimental to the girls’ self-esteem. Gals Read is being developed to support girls’ interest in reading for pleasure while providing a mentorship opportunity with dynamic professional women from the local community.

Women who are willing to spend one lunch break or several reading to fourth grade girls are needed in Fairbanks this semester. Here’s how it works: four Gals Read books have been specially selected by local librarians. Teams of volunteer women will read to the girls during their lunch period while projecting images from the books using document cameras to provide an interactive experience. Multi-copy sets of the books are also given to the participating schools’ libraries and the children are invited to a party at the Noel Wien library at the end of the program.

Gals Read will reach ten district schools this year, up from three last year. The program runs in late January and February. Each of the ten schools will have either a Wednesday/Friday or Tuesday/Thursday schedule. Women readers will visit each school twice a week for four weeks. Gals Read takes place during the fourth grade lunch period which falls between 11:55am-1pm, depending on the school.
